Sooke Sewing & Quilting Series!

Join Mary Ann Tennent and Joni Newman in one of their sewing classes to learn new skills, upgrade existing sewing skills, and create something beautiful!

Open to ages 12+

Equipment: There are some sewing machines for use so please indicate upon registration if you need one of them.  We also have scissors, thread, seam rippers and other basic supplies available for your use. 

If you have your own machine and/or your own preferred sewing equipment, please bring it.

October 19th: Introduction to Applique 12 +

10am - 4pm

$105.00 +GST

Skill Level: Confident Beginner

Course Description: Make a beautiful poppy wall hanging with this introduction to using fusible web and machine stitching.  Learn tips for tracing and selecting fusibles and fabrics. Once the picture is made some machine stitching brings it to life.

Materials Included: Fabric and notions to complete the project, embellishments and pattern

Materials-Required 

Red, Green and Neutral thread (there will be thread available to use at class if needed)

Sewing machine in good working order, manual, bobbins, machine screw driver, sewing feet, cleaning brush

 

Materials- Optional 

Mini-Iron and ironing mat 

Teflon (Applique) pressing sheet

October 25: Holiday Mug Rugs 12 +

11am-3pm

$80 +GST

Skill level: Beginner

Course Description: Learn how to design and make mug rugs with a feature fabric for four different holidays. You will make four mug rugs- one for each of Halloween/Harvest, Christmas, Valentine’s Day and Canada Day. These mini-quilts make great gifts and are a great way to dress up your coffee or tea break. All fabric to complete four rugs is supplied. The pattern is also provided so that you can get creative and make your own.

 

Materials Included: Fabric, Batting and Backing for four mug rugs is included in the class kit.

Neutral thread  

Sewing machine in good working order, manual, bobbins, machine screw driver, sewing feet, cleaning brush

November 1st: Lap Quilt from a Panel 12 +

10am - 4pm

$150 +GST

Skill Level: Confident Beginner

Course Description: Turn a beautiful whale or Octopus panel into a cozy lap quilt top by adding customized borders.

Materials Included: Panel (choice of Whale or Octopus), fabric for borders and binding, Pattern

Materials-Required:

Neutral thread

Sewing machine in good working order, manual, bobbins, machine screw driver, sewing feet, cleaning brush

Saturday November 15th: Wine and Gift Bag 12 +

11am-3pm

$75 +GST

Skill Level: Beginner

Course Description:  Have fun getting ready for gifting season and learn how to make a wine bag and a gift bag. These simple bags are fun to make and make great gifts on their own or used to wrap up presents.

 

Materials Included: Basic bag templates, materials and instructions are provided in the class kit.

 

Materials Required:

Neutral thread

Sewing machine in good working order, manual, bobbins, machine screw driver, sewing feet, cleaning brush 

 

Materials-Optional:

You can bring extra fabric if you want to start another bag. Additional Embroidered designs will be available to purchase at class.

Sat Nov 22nd: Fabric Stained Glass Poinsettia 12 +

Skill Level Absolute Beginner
Course Description: Learn about working with fusibles to create a small fabric stained glass picture. This technique is just like fabric “paint by number”. Learn a simple technique for mounting a fabric creation for hanging.


Materials Included: Fabric, fusible, mounting canvas. Additional designs available for purchase at class.

Materials-Required: Sewing machine in good working order.

Materials-Optional: Mini-Iron and ironing mat, small light table.

 

Sat Nov 29th: Quilted Christmas Postcards 12 +
11am-3pm
$70 +GST
Skill Level Beginner

Course Description: Learn how to make postcards (and gift cards) out of fabric. They are ready to mail to friends and family and make great keepsakes.

Materials Included: Fabric, Batting and Backing for two postcards is included in the class kit

Materials-Required: Sewing machine in good working order

Materials-Optional:
Additional postcard backs will be available to purchase at class. Instructors will be bringing lots of scraps and embellishments to play with.

Sat December 6th: Simple Christmas Table Runner 12 +
10am-4pm
$115 + GST
Skill Level Confident Beginner
Course Description: Simple and quick to make and easily adapted to longer or shorter tables, this Christmas table runner will dress up your holiday. Also makes a great hostess gift.

Materials Included: Pattern plus fabric to make and bind the runner. There will be an assortment of kits in Christmas fabrics to choose from.

Materials- Required: Sewing machine in good working order

Date TBD:  Make a Swim Bag 12 +

11am-3pm

$80 +GST

Skill Level: Beginner

Make a cute, functional, lined waterproof bag to carry your towel and swimsuit, camping dishes, toiletries or anything else that might need a waterproof bag. Bag size up to 18”X20”.

Learn basic zipper installation.

 

Included in Cost: PUL fabric in a variety of prints, Zipper and pattern. Additional kits available for purchase at class
