A Seat For A Seat Fundraiser
A set of beautiful, one-of-a-kind "art chairs" created by students at Edward Milne Community School are now available for purchase as part of a fundraising campaign for new seating in the Sooke Community Theatre at EMCS. Under the direction of visual arts teacher Sue Garat, EMCS students have hand-painted replicas of masterpieces onto a set of 30 comfortable chairs formerly used in the school's staffroom, seminar room and offices. The chairs have been painted with a polymer-based acrylic and then sprayed with a UV and water-resistant sealant primer.
The colourful collection includes replicas of works by west coast icon Emily Carr, Anishinaabe artist Norval Morrisseau, the anonymous UK street artist/activist Banksy, New York graffiti artist Keith Haring and the Dutch modernist Piet Mondrian. The idea to repurpose the chairs came from the students wanting to keep the chairs out of the landfill while showcasing their creativity and skills. A donation of $300 or more will remove chairs from the auction and ensure they are held for the bidder. Charitable tax receipts will be issued for any bid above $75, upon request.
A deadline of June 13, 2020 has been set for all bidding. The highest bid for each chair short of $300 received by that date will be final.
